LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY AS A HISTORICAL AND DOCUMENTARY SERVICE.
Most of the photographs that I have taken happen once. I have the good fortune of being at the right place at the right time and captured something of singular beauty. Others are special but I might find something similar in another location and another year.
However, where I live has moved two temperature zones south in just the last few years due to year by year increase in temperature. This increase, by the actions of many people, is going to increase and the speed at which it increases will increase also. This "exponential" rise is going to be catastrophic, probably within the lifetimes of our children.
When I began photographing I never viewed my images as documentary, in that I was preserving something that would exist only as a photographic print. I am terrified that this has now become true.
Accordingly I am preparing archival prints for donation to museums. It may seem pretentious of me to suggest that I am performing a historical service, but were I not so familiar with the science of climate change I would never make such a suggestion.
