Trees ~ Spring

Massachusetts Turnpike

Crossing I-90 at Exit 11

JW Crossing Pike with Camera on Back_DSC1267

I began photographing with a 4x5 view camera in 1974. However it wasn’t until 1981 that I caught on to what I was trying to do, which was to make compositions out of details rather than making a composition that had detail.

The Boston Globe reviewer who called me a vertuoso also said he would not want to take my prints home since they were too perfect. Having sold thousands of prints and having friends find them in other parts of the country I don’t think he quite got it. Possibly he was standing too close (the real detail requires reading glasses) or he did not realize that the detail was there not for the sake of it, but because I loved how it looked but only in the context in which I found it.

The context in this case was an overlook on the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) about 15 miles west of Boston where I could be at the level of the tree canopy and yet close to it. In most instances this would have required a helocopter.
